Making Friends

I was pleased to get to know the singers behind the scenes. I remembered being taken to Sadlers Wells Opera when I was a kid. Joan Cross was the prima donna. Kathleen Ferrier was a Lancashire lass who had worked for the post office telephones and had been discovered by Bruno Walter. Despite her great success Kathleen was very sociable with no affectations, unfortunately she died of cancer a year or so later. I became very friendly with Richard Lewis, a fine tenor.
Peter Pears is what I would call a fine English gentleman and had a good high tenor voice. His partnership with Britten was an open secret.
