The first performance of Albert Herring

The day after the first performance of Alber Herring, we were rehearsing “Lucretia”.  We were having  a cup of coffee during the interval, Ben was sitting beside me.  I was reading the newspaper critique, and Ben said “Well, Robert, what do the critics say?”   The critic, Hans Keller, wrote that there was a Freudian side to the opera, and Albert, although he was just a simple village boy was sending a message.

At this, Ben laughed out loud and said, “I only wanted to amuse people”.
